Deuterium Oxide
Heavy water is a compound of deuterium and oxygen, also known as deuterium oxide. The molecular formula D2O has a molecular weight of 20.0275, which is about 11% higher than that of water (H2O), which has a molecular weight of 18.0153, so it is called heavy water.
The main use of heavy water is as a "moderator" in nuclear reactors, reducing the speed of neutrons and controlling the fission process. It is also a coolant. It is also used in deuterium gas manufacturing including pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, hydrology, scientific research and manufacturing, as well as in the optical fiber and semiconductor industries.
